Heads of states of African countries and Nyerere’s widow Maria Gabriel Magige will attend.
Last year, President Yoweri Museveni supported the campaign to have Nyerere recognised as a saint.
The campaign began in January 2006, when Rome accepted the request from Bishop Musoma of Northern Tanzania Diocese.
Meanwhile, preparations for the celebrations are in high gear. Fr. Dennis Ssebuggwawo, the shrine rector, said the programme at the Catholic Shrine will begin with a nine-day Novena (reciting of prayers) from May 26 to June 2.
Ssebuggwawo said Moroto diocese will host this year’s celebrations under the theme “I am with you always, yes to the end of the time (Mathew 28:20)”.
Twenty-two Uganda martyrs were murdered at the Catholic shrines between 1885 and 1886.
